Plan for Drainage Under Your Artificial Turf

Before you install your artificial turf, you need to make sure that you plan for drainage. Otherwise, your artificial turf will quickly become waterlogged and damaged. The best way to ensure good drainage is to install a layer of gravel underneath the turf. This will allow water to drain away quickly and prevent pooling. You can also add a drainage pipe to carry away any excess water. If you live in an area with heavy rainfall, you may also want to consider installing a sump pump to help with drainage -- particularly if the turf is installed on a hill. This will ensure that any water is quickly removed from the artificial turf and prevents flooding.

Problems to Avoid When Installing Artificial Turf

These are the most common problems that occur with installing artificial grass; be sure your lawn care professional is experienced in artificial turf installation.

Poor drainage. If water can’t drain away quickly, it will pool on the surface of the turf and eventually lead to Mold growth and damage to the turf itself. You can avoid this by installing a layer of gravel underneath the turf and adding a drainage pipe to carry away any excess water.
Sump pump needed if your area receives heavy rainfall. This will prevent flooding.
Ground preparation. Compact the soil before laying down the artificial turf.
Installing Turf on a Slope. Take measures to prevent erosion, otherwise, the turf will eventually start to wash away. To avoid this, select a turf with a strong backing and use nails or stakes to secure it in place. You may also want to add landscaping fabric to help hold the turf in place.
Wrong infill. If you don't use the right infill for your artificial turf, it's likely that the turf will eventually start to compact and become hard. This can cause problems with drainage and also make the turf less comfortable to walk on.
